Best Dog Ramps for SUV Side Doors: Fitment Guide

Most dog ramps are built for the back of the car. Drop the tailgate, rest the ramp on the cargo floor, done. The rear side door is a different story. The opening is narrower, the B-pillar and the door itself pinch the space, and the seat sits at an angle to the ground. A wide cargo ramp, and plenty of them run 18 to 20 inches across, can jam against the door frame before it ever reaches the seat.

So for side-door loading, width matters as much as length. Below are three options with verified manufacturer specs that run 15 to 17 inches wide, plus a quick way to measure your own car before you buy.

Best Heavy-Duty

Specs come from each manufacturer’s product page, checked October 2026. “Door clearance” is simply the ramp’s width; give yourself an extra inch or two of wiggle room.

Measure first: 3 numbers that decide the fit

  1. Door opening width. Open the rear door all the way. Measure straight across from the B-pillar (the post between the front and back doors) to the inside edge of the open door panel, at seat height. Your ramp needs to be narrower than that, with an inch or two to spare.
  2. Ground-to-seat height. Measure from the ground to the top of the seat cushion where your dog will step on. Most SUV back seats land somewhere around 20 to 24 inches.
  3. Sideways parking room. A 67″ to 70″ ramp at that height sticks out about 5 to 5.5 feet from the side of your car. If you usually park beside another car or a curb, measure that gap before you buy.

How steep will it be?

Angle is what your dog’s joints actually feel. Here’s what each ramp gives you on a 22-inch back seat, using angle = arcsin(rise ÷ ramp length):

  • PetSTEP (70″): about 18°
  • PetSafe Happy Ride at full 70″: about 18°, but about 26° if you shorten it to 50″ in a tight spot
  • WeatherTech (67″): about 19°

All three land in the 18° to 22° zone we look for when a dog has IVDD or achy joints, as long as you use the full length. Want the math for other heights? See our fitment reference table.

Best Overall for Side Doors

WeatherTech PetRamp

  • 67″ long
  • 15″ wide
  • 300 lb rating
  • 16 lb
  • Folds to 33.5″
  • Made in USA

What we like

  • At 15″ wide, it’s the most likely of the three to slip through a narrow rear doorway.
  • Light enough at 16 lb to lift in and out of the car without a struggle.
  • Rubber feet on both ends help keep it from sliding on the seat or the pavement.
  • Designed and made in the USA.

Watch out for

  • The narrow walkway leaves less room for a big, clumsy dog to wander off the edge.
  • Even folded, it’s 33.5″ long, so check your cargo space.
Living with it: Set the top end flat on the seat cushion, not the door sill, so the rubber feet grip the upholstery instead of your paint.
Best Heavy-Duty / Wet-Paw Grip

PetSTEP Folding Pet Ramp

  • 70″ long
  • 17″ wide
  • 500 lb rating
  • 18.5 lb
  • Plastic & fiberglass composite

What we like

  • The 500 lb rating leaves a huge margin for a 100-plus pound dog.
  • The ridged rubber walkway gives paws more to push against than a flat surface, which helps after a muddy walk or a rainy day.
  • At 70″, it’s the longest fixed ramp here, so you get the gentlest slope.

Watch out for

  • At 17″ wide, it’s the widest pick. Measure your door opening before you order.
  • At 18.5 lb, it’s the heaviest of the three to lift.
  • PetSTEP lists its folded length as both 35″ and 37″, so plan for the longer number.
Living with it: Rinse the ridges with a hose now and then. Packed-in dirt is what makes a ridged surface slick.
Best for Tight Parking Spaces

PetSafe Happy Ride Compact Telescoping Dog Ramp

  • 28″–70″ long
  • 16″ wide
  • 300 lb rating
  • 14 lb
  • Aluminum, side rails

What we like

  • It telescopes, so you can shorten it when there’s not 5 feet of space beside your car.
  • The lightest pick here at 14 lb, and it collapses to 28″ long.
  • Side rails help keep a nervous dog centered on the walkway.

Watch out for

  • Shorter means steeper. On a 22″ seat, 50″ of ramp is about 26°, so extend it fully when you can.
  • Its 16″ width needs a slightly wider door opening than the WeatherTech.
Living with it: Lock each section fully before your dog steps on. Most telescoping wobbles come from a section that’s only partly locked.

Protect your door sill and keep the ramp clean

  • Rest the ramp on the seat, not the sill. The painted door sill scratches easily. Let the top of the ramp sit on the seat cushion.
  • Add a buffer. If the ramp has to touch the sill, fold a microfiber towel or use a clear sill protector film under that spot.
  • Knock off grit first. Sand and small stones stuck to the ramp’s feet are what actually scratch paint. Wipe the feet before you set the ramp down.
  • Clean the walkway regularly. Mud, hair and dried slobber make any surface slippery. Wipe rubber surfaces with warm soapy water and let them dry before folding.
  • Cover the seat. A hammock-style seat cover protects the upholstery from claws as your dog steps off the ramp.

Side-Door Dog Ramp FAQs

Will a regular cargo ramp work through my SUV’s rear side door?

Sometimes, but many cargo ramps are 18 to 20 inches wide and can jam against the door frame. Measure your door opening from the B-pillar to the open door panel. Pick a ramp at least an inch or two narrower than that.

How long should a dog ramp be for an SUV back seat?

For a typical 20 to 24 inch seat height, a ramp around 53 to 64 inches long keeps the slope at about 22 degrees or less. The 67 to 70 inch ramps in this guide give you about 18 to 19 degrees on a 22-inch seat.

Is a telescoping ramp as safe as a folding ramp?

Yes, when every section is fully locked and the ramp is extended long enough. The catch is that shortening it makes it steeper, so use the full length whenever you have the room.

How do I stop the ramp from scratching my car?

Rest the top end on the seat cushion instead of the painted sill. Wipe grit off the ramp’s feet before setting it down, and add a microfiber towel or sill protector film if it has to touch the paint.

The PupEntryRamps editors research dog ramps, steps, and hitch stairs by the numbers. For every product we calculate the real incline angle from its rise and length (we look for 18 to 22 degrees for dogs with IVDD or arthritic joints), compare manufacturer weight ratings and deflection specs for dogs over 100 lb, look closely at the paw traction surface, and check fit against actual SUV side-door, cargo-tailgate, and bed heights. We tell you exactly where our numbers come from, and we never accept payment for a recommendation.
